How To Create A macOS (OS X) Program Installer Without The App Store 'Updated 2023'

Apple has made it increasingly difficult for developers who aren't part of their exclusive Developer Program to distribute apps through the Mac App Store. One major reason is that these programs need to be signed with a valid Apple ID, which comes at an additional cost.

In this article, we'll show you how to create and install your own macOS (formerly OS X) program without needing to join Apple's developer program or pay any fees whatsoever!

Here are the steps involved:

Step 1: Choose Your IDE

To start off with creating a .app bundle for distribution on Macs outside of App Store, choose an Integrated Development Environment that supports building universal binaries - preferably Xcode since it comes pre-installed.

Once you've selected your preferred IDE (Integrated Development Environment), let's move onto the next step!

Step 2: Set Up Your Project

In this case, we'll be using Xcode. After launching the program and creating a new project under 'macOS > Cocoa App', go to File -> New -> Target... In the window that appears, select 'App' from under 'macOS'. Name your target something descriptive like 'MyCoolApp'.
